Application Deadline: June 22, 2007
In response to student
requests, six out of twelve places in Dr. Gorman's section for next academic
year SW 298, Section 4 {AY 07-08} Are being designated for students who have a
particular interest in working with Dr Gorman one of the following topic
areas: HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, LGBT {lesbian-gay-bisexual transgender} issues
and/or projects which will utilize primarily qualitative methodology.The
remaining six positions will be filled as per the standard first come first
served My SJSU registration process. If you are interested in working on one of these topics, please
submit an application with the following information by June 22, 2007 as
detailed below. Those students
selected will be notified by Dr Gorman during the
summer.

Exciting Opportunity to Attend A Great Event -- Free!
Hello Everyone,
So, what are you doing on Saturday, May 26th? I
have an exciting volunteer opportunity that allows free entrance to a fabulous
event. Do I have your attention? Good.
Saturday, May 26th from 2 to
4pm-ish is the graduation ceremony for MSW and BASW students. We need
volunteers!
So why should you volunteer…let me count the
reasons…
First, it will inspire you, believe me it will, it did for
me when I volunteered for my predecessors graduation.
Second, you
will have fun! Did I mention fun?
Third, if you want a graduation
that will also be fabulous, you will attend to see how it is done! We are
leaving behind big shoes to fill, being the first Social Work Graduation that is
off campus with close to 2000 people who will be in attendance.
Fourth, anyone interested in SWGSA leadership and having a great
graduation, should volunteer. Believe me, you will need to start organizing this
summer. This volunteer opportunity will help provide vision for your organizing!
Otherwise, you can return to the old ways of graduation where each graduate can
only invite 4 people….your choice.
Fifth, it is a great thing to
volunteer and it feels great when you give back, right? What better thing but to
volunteer for a good group of folks, your peers, who give back to the community.

Hello Everyone!
As I sit down to write some of my final announcements, I cannot help to
express to you that it has been my honor to speak with you all on a regular
basis over the internet. Additionally, I would like to take a moment to say that
it has also been an honor to serve as your president and I will surely miss all
of you that I have been fortunate enough to get to know! My sincerest thanks and
I wish you all well!
So… “Who is the keynote of our graduation?” Well, I am glad that you ask. Ok,
pull out your drums. Do I hear a drum roll? Not yet….I am waiting. Really! Ok
good job, I hear the drum roll now….
Her name is Dr Patricia Cedeño-Zamor. She was selected for her commitment to
an international transcultural approach to social work. She is a tenured
professor at Salem State College and also is currently teaching at Wheelock
College as an Associate Professor and Director of the BSW Program. Her practice
and academic expertise is in the area of Immigrant/Refugee Adaptation, Health
and Mental Health Concerns. Patricia has been a member of NASW for over 20 years
held various leadership roles on the Board, and was elected to a national office
as Region 1 representative, for RI, NH, VT, ME, MA. She serves on voluntary
committees such as founding member of UNITY, serving in the capacity as Vice
President, and Trustee; Training Director of MA Chapter of Amigos; The Peace
Institute, Survivors of Homicide; proposal reviewer for Senior Fulbright
Fellows. Cedeño-Zamor received doctoral awards from NIMH, SAMSHA and
CSWE.
Her life’s work involves making a difference by learning, sharing and
providing support to children and families wherever she can, including the U.S.
and, her birth country, Trinidad and Tobago. You can learn more about her at:

Also, I wanted to remind all near future graduates to attend the Graduation
rehearsal this coming Monday 21, 2007 at 6:00pm at SH 100. It will take place
from 6:00pm to approximately 8:00pm. Please be there on time. Any questions that
cannot wait until Monday, contact Erika Martinez @ emartinez823@yahoo.com.
Graduation
committee will be meeting at the location of the rehearsal, at SH 100, at 5pm,
one hour early to take care of folding the graduate certificates that will be
passed out to you during the ceremony. More hands mean lighter work for all! So
please, come a little early ready to help.
Erika will also be at
SH 100 from 5pm to 6pm to finalize any pending ticket issues. So if you need to
pick up tickets, be there a little early with your ID. If you need to buy any
more tickets, bring that checkbook and be early! Monday is your last chance to
take care of graduation business, so show up early and be sure to do what needs
to be done!
Enjoy Your Weekend! Wait! Is this the first weekend
that you can remember not worrying about 298? Well, good for you! Be sure to
Enjoy It! And be sure to catch up on sleep and rest up for next weekend…the Main
Event!

We will have an opportunity to discuss transition of SWGSA leadership from the
2007 graduating class to those of you returning to the MSW Program next
year. This discussion is open to all and will be part of the next SWGSA
meeting on Monday May 14th at 12:00 noon in the Social Work office. We
will also schedule follow-up meetings after we have a better idea of who the new

More Graduation News
Hello everyone we are near the end of the school year
and graduation is almost here. We have some important information for
everyone so please mark your calendars.
1. Extra Graduation
Tickets
We have been working really hard with Parkside
Hall for more seating in order to meet everyone's needs and we did it! We have a
limited amount of extra seating. Students, who requested extra tickets
during ticket distribution, please bring your checkbooks on Monday 14, 2007. We
will be selling the tickets in the back of the Social Work office where the
student mailboxes are at from 10-1:30 and 4:00-6:00pm.
2. Rehearsal
Time
Graduation rehearsal will be on Monday 21, 2007 at 6:00pm at SH 100.
Please be there on time.
3. Recycling Tickets
Students who have
requested to recycle their tickets please contact Erika Martinez @ emartinez823@yahoo.com and let her know
how many tickets you would like to recycle, she will email you personally and
discuss with you your options.
4. Discrepancies with your
tickets?(This may apply to you)
-Students who did not received their tickets
and Erika Martinez has proof of check being cashed, you will receive your
tickets.
-Students who received less tickets than requested, want
the total amount of tickets, and your checks were never cashed please bring your
check books and re-write another check. If check was cashed please bring proof
of this action made.
- For students whose checks were never cashed
please bring your checkbooks and re-write another check for the amount of
tickets you requested.
If you are in any of these situations please
come on Monday 14, 2007 when the extra tickets are being sold.
If
for some reason in the future, you have noticed that we have double charged you
for the same amount of tickets, please contact Dr. Peter Lee and he will
reimburse you.

111 - Update, Summer School Add Codes
Hi all,
Add codes for the second section of Summer ScWk 222 are now available.
If you have not yet received a code, please email me at plee4@email.sjsu.edu. This summer
section will be offered at the same time slot as the first summer section,
Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 to 8:00pm. Although students must have
completed ScWk 220 and 221 as prerequisites, they do NOT have to be in summer
internship to be in this course. The cap is 25 students.
Our Director, Alice Hines, was able to convince the University to accommodate
students for an additional ScWk 222 summer section. The university is
still very concerned about minimum class sizes and strain on the budget, but we
are able to provide this added section at least for this summer. PLEASE
ENROLL so we can demonstrate this need.

Hi all,
The draft of the Fall 2007 MSW program schedule is attached. The
schedule will also be available through the SJSU catalog of classes and should
also be active on-line next week . Please note the following:
All Students
Please consult your MSW Student Handbook for the sequence of courses your
should be following according to your field of practice. If you have questions,
please contact your faculty advisor first, and then ask me if you still need
help. Please follow the course plans as they are designed to fulfill both
School and University requirements for your MSW degree.
Students Entering Final Year of the MSW Program (3rd Year 3-Year Students
and 2nd Year Full-Time Students)
An orientation session is scheduled for the first week of the
semester. Details TBA.
Your cohort assignments no longer apply since you be enrolling in classes
according to your field of practice (i.e., specialization of Aging; Children,
Youth, and Family; School Social Work; and Health / Mental Health).
Most courses have enrollment open according to your MYSJSU scheduled
appointment or on a first-come first-served basis.
A few ScWk 298 sections will have restricted or special enrollment:
Section 1 with me (Dr. Lee) is reserved for those applying and accepted for
research assistant positions associated with the 298 special project; Section 9
has 6 slots reserved for students applying and accepted to areas of interest
with Dr. Gorman's research; and Section 12 is for those who are completing 298
from previous years. For those special positions, please see the flyers
and email announcements (MSW Mail messages 2007:107 and 2007:108).
Students anticipating to be a research assistant should enroll in an open 298
section and not drop until notified of final section assignment. Students
who are not able to enroll in a 298 section (i.e., if spaces are filled) will
have an opportunity to add sections in August when we have a better idea of
slots needed. EVERYONE is guaranteed a 298 slot somewhere.
The Saturday ScWk 270 course is reserved for Post-MSW PPSC
students.
3-Year Students Entering 2nd Year of the 3-Year Program
An orientation session specific to field education is scheduled for the
week before the start of the semester. Details TBA.
Your cohort assignments and times for classes apply for one more year as
part of the foundation level curriculum plan. i.e., you are in the same Cohorts
5 and 6.
Your 2nd year courses (ScWk 220, 240, and 230) will need add codes
assigned to you before you can enroll through MYSJSU. When these
become available from the university, I will distribute them to you via another
MSW Mail message. Space has been saved for you in these sections.

PART TIME JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: DIRECTOR
DOROTHY DAY HOUSE:
A small non-profit in Berkeley is looking for a
Director to oversee operations. We serve meals in downtown Berkeley six
days per week, and run a shelter for the homeless during the winter months.
This is a half-time position (15-20 hours per week) and pays approximately
$15,000.00 per year, depending upon qualifications and experience. Most
work can be done from home, but you must be available in the mornings (5:00am
10:00am) and spend approximately 1 hour per day, 4-5 times per week
(8:00am-9:00am) serving meals to the homeless in Berkeley.
The current Director is a PhD student in Social Welfare at Berkeley, and will
be moving at the end of May.
Qualities needed: Strong leadership and organizational skills and a desire to
work among the poverty stricken, are necessary qualities. Preferred
qualities include: experience/knowledge in the area of administration of social
services and/or non-profit organizations, social work/social service background,
food service background. This position reports to the Board of
Directors.

106 - Spanish Certificate Exam
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
MSW students who are graduating, and are interested in taking the Spanish
Counseling Certificate exam
The exam will be offered on May 15, 16, and 17. See sign up sheet on
Dr. Reyes' office door (in room 211D) for times, and to sign up to schedule you
exam.
NOTE: There is no study guide for the exam. The student will be asked
to read a couple of vignettes in Spanish, and suggest social work
interventions.

Hi all,
Thank you for your patience. Due to the number of students enrolled in
summer internship, ScWk 232, there are no more available slots for summer ScWk
222. We wish that there were more resources available from the University
to offer more classes, unfortunately this is not the case this summer. We
will continue to express our need for more resources to SJSU.
There are other options to lighten semester class loads, for example placing
a request to go from the full-time program to the 3-year program, and extending
your curriculum plan to beyond 3 years. Please feel free to contact me if
you would like to discuss these options.

FIs and FFLs. This issue of international human trafficking is a modern day form
of human slavery, which is increasing in these times of growing poverty, war,
civil unrest and globalization. This panel will increase awareness about
this human issue and provide specific strategies for social workers.
The panel/event was organized by the San Jose State University School of
Social Work SW 285 (Social Work and Social Problems) class, taught by Dr.
Migdalia Reyes. Social Work 285 examined the economic, political, social and
cultural factors operating at the local, national and global level, paying
particular attention to the disenfranchised, oppressed and marginalized groups,
including immigrants and refugees. This class provided a transcultural
multi-systems international social work framework, culminating in the
organization of this wonderful panel/event.
